“The Night Before the Space Age” is the new album from cult Portuguese singer Bernardo Devlin released on 25th April 2025.
Musically the songs of “The Night Before the Space Age” are raw, stripped-back arrangements that give the perfect backing to Devlin’s rich baritone vocal, with tracks that have influences that range from the haunting, spectral sounds of The Velvet Underground to the late night, hangdog balladry of Tom Waits. There’s a razor-sharp post punk edge that calls to mind Television and Wire and a classicism to the song-writing that evokes Serge Gainsbourg and Scott Walker. The rich, cinematic atmosphere conjures a world reminiscent of noir flicks such as Taxi Driver and even the late-night dystopia of Blade Runner in Devlin‘s evocative descriptions of the grandeur and the decay of sprawling urban centres with glittering lights and trashy wastelands.
