El Genio Equivocado

After a four year hiatus that took Big Summer’s frontman (and only man) Vasco Batista away from his Barcelona home, around the Bay of Biscay and all the way up to Hackney, London, the man is back with the 5-song EP “Dead Royalty”. From the very start, we see the title has been inspired by Vasco’s changed surroundings – palaces, royal gardens and seeing the Queen’s face everywhere. But does ‘royalty’ refer to dead kings and queens or in this case – more harshly – to hopes and dreams?

After a four year hiatus that took Big Summer’s frontman (and only man) Vasco Batista away from his Barcelona home, around the Bay of Biscay and all the way up to Hackney, London, the man is back with the 5-song EP “Dead Royalty”. From the very start, we see the title has been inspired by Vasco’s changed surroundings – palaces, royal gardens and seeing the Queen’s face everywhere. But does ‘royalty’ refer to dead kings and queens or in this case – more harshly – to hopes and dreams?

Keeping in line with Big Summer‘s previous release ‘Trigger’, one can see the departure from a previous summery feel-good vibe into much darker territories, perhaps reflecting Vasco’s journey from sunny Barcelona to grey and gloomy London. The songs are dark even when fast paced, and tell us stories about love, heartbreak and the end of the world – nothing new if you’re a Big Summer fan. But although the lyrics keep us tied to that Big Summer feel we have grown to expect over the past few years, musically the band has shifted and evolved into a more refined sound with strong song structures. Totally worth a listen.
