Floating Points\u2019<\/strong> personal collection of global soul, ambient, jazz and folk treasures form the latest in the warmly revered Late Night Tales<\/strong> series.<\/p>\n

Sam Shepherd aka Floating Points\u2019<\/strong> music taste is notoriously tricky to define, ranging from ethereal classical at one end to coruscating techno at the other, united only in a firm belief in the transcendental power of music to move hearts, minds and \u2013 yes \u2013 feet. Similarly, his production career has ranged from early experiments in\u00a0dance music\u00a0with breakout records such as the \u2018Shadows EP\u2019 and collaborating with legendary Gnawa master Mahmoud Guinia to his expansive album \u2018Elaenia\u2019, which met with critical acclaim upon its release in 2015.<\/p>\n

This Late Night Tales<\/strong> excursion into the depths of the evening reflects his broad tastes. The globally-travelled producer has collected untold treasures on his travels from dusty stores in Brazil to market stalls near his hometown. There\u2019s the gorgeous \u2018Via L\u00e0ctea\u2019, culled from Carlos Walker\u2019s debut album, Abu Talib\u2019s (Bobby Wright) plaintive \u2018Blood Of An American\u2019 and Robert Vanderbilt\u2019s gospel reworking of Manchild\u2019s \u2018Especially For You\u2019. Raw soul and feeling oozing from each song\u2019s pores.<\/p>\n

At the other end of the music scale are the modernists, such as Qu\u00e9b\u00e9coise Kara-Lis Coverdale who weighs in with the indelible \u2018Moments In Love\u2019, Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith whose \u2018Milk\u2019 is an exercise in tranquility, while Sarah Davachi\u2019s meditative mix-opener offers respite from a weary world.<\/p>\n

We have some tracks exclusive to Late Night Tales<\/strong>; alongside Davachi\u2019s offerings there is also Toshimaru Nakamura\u2019s \u2018Nimb #59\u2019, as well as the now traditional cover version.\u00a0Shepherd delved into his childhood memory for this one,\u00a0a track taken from the first album his parents bought him, Kenny Wheeler\u2019s \u2018Music For Large & Small Ensembles\u2019: Sam offers up his interpretation of \u2018Opening Part 1\u2019.\u00a0Wheeler also contributes horns to Azimuth track The Tunnel, written and performed by Norma Winstone and John Taylor who, coincidentally, are the parents of Floating Points\u2019 drummer Leo Taylor.\u00a0Closing the album, Lauren Laverne reads the suitably nocturnal poem \u2018Ah! Why, Because The Dazzling Sun\u2019 by\u00a0Emily Bront\u00eb.<\/p>\n
